After 2 years in which individual students at Taconic High School presented at a county-wide event called “Berkshire Earth Expo” (Cooler Berkshires 2019 – YouTube), Pittsfield Public Schools formally implemented the Cooler Communities program in both Taconic and Pittsfield High Schools this school year.
The event was held at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield on April 14, 2022. It showcased student projects centered around environmental protection and climate solutions. This informative and fun event included food, music, art, games, and student presentations. It was co-organized by local volunteers from Living the Change Berkshires and you can watch it all here, courtesy of Pittsfield Community TV.
Here is a quote from curriculum director Maggie Harrington-Esko at Pittsfield High School: What a great event! I am so grateful that our students had the opportunity to participate in the event, and that their work was showcased…. this is what schooling should look like! I had some great discussions with students following the event, and they also enjoyed the event.
We are especially excited that, in addition to High School participation, the district is planning to embed Cooler Communities across 8th grade science, art and civics classes beginning in 2023.
