Bringing
Ideas to Life for People and the Planet
Harold Grinspoon is a Western Massachusetts entrepreneur, philanthropist, and artist, who turned his curiosity and resources into opportunities for others to learn, celebrate, and strengthen their communities. As co-founder and principal funder of Cooler Communities, he helped bring that spirit to climate education—giving young people opportunities to understand the world around them and take part in shaping its future.
From saving energy to community action
Harold’s interest in energy conservation grew out of practical experience. Over his years as a real estate investor, he saw lots of unnecessary energy waste in buildings and recognized the benefits of addressing it: lower expenses, more comfortable homes, and less pollution.
In 2016, a drive-by thermal imaging technology caught his attention. Harold founded Ener-G-save and funded the collection of thermal images of 100,000 homes across the Pioneer Valley. Working with ten towns, the program sent personalized letters to homeowners whose properties showed promising opportunities for energy improvements, including an image of their own home. It was a concrete invitation to act—and a way to connect environmental responsibility with everyday needs.
Ener-G-save’s work expanded through partnerships with Mass Save, municipalities, grassroots organizations, businesses, and faith communities. The project helped residents navigate energy efficiency incentives and find ways to make their homes more affordable and comfortable while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Helping young people become part of the solution
In 2019, Harold turned his attention to education, co-founding Cooler Communities with Uli Nagel, who is also serving as its director.
Cooler Communities connects classroom learning with community action. Its climate fairs give students a public platform to share their research, demonstrate solutions, and engage families and neighbors. Young people become educators themselves, bringing conversations about energy and the environment beyond the school walls.
That approach has taken many forms: students investigating energy efficiency and clean energy, exploring composting and biodiversity, creating art about their concerns and visions for climate change, and testing ways to cool overheated classrooms. Across all these activities, the emphasis is on discovery and empowerment – elevating students’ voices in their communities.
Opening doors through books
Books are another important thread in Harold’s philanthropy. Through the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s PJ Library program, he helped bring free Jewish children’s books into family homes around the world. In his Giving Pledge letter, Harold describes the importance of children and parents reading together, and the opportunity for both generations to learn through a shared story.
Energy Detectives brings engaging picture books into climate education. Launched in 2023 under the Cooler Communities umbrella, the picture book series explores subjects such as solar energy and energy conservation, inviting children’s curiosity and sense of play. Written by Madelyn Rosenberg and illustrated by Paul Meisel, the books are offered to elementary teachers and their students at no cost, alongside standards-aligned lesson plans and resources for families. Each child can take their book(s) home, extending discovery from the classroom to the household.
Harold’s support made it possible to put these resources directly into teachers’ and children’s hands, creating another opportunity for learning to travel through families and communities.
A wider commitment to learning, creativity, and community
Harold’s environmental work is a small part of Harold’s philanthropic engagement. In Western Massachusetts, the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation recognizes outstanding teachers, supports improvements on local farms, and helps young children develop a love of reading. Through the separate Harold Grinspoon Foundation, his work supports Jewish learning, culture, and community connections around the world.
For Cooler Communities and Energy Detectives, Harold’s contribution has been foundational. We are deeply grateful for the generosity and initiative that helped bring this work to life.
